Wildlife Ski Tour - Algonquin Park



*The Wildlife Ski Tour for 2015 has been cancelled but will resume in March of 2016. Please stay-tuned for updates on what to expect for 2016!


This past winter, the WRS in cooperation with Algonquin Park and the Friends of Algonquin Park hosted the second annual Wildlife Ski Tour March 1st, 2014. Skier's enjoyed some of Canada's Top 10 cross country trails, as well as a chili lunch and draw prizes while meeting researchers and learning about winter habitats of Algonquin wildlife! Trails are groomed for both skate and classic techniques. Please contact the Friends of Algonquin Park for registration information for the 2016 event!


All proceeds to support natural heritage and research programs.

2015 Event Information, Ski Tour to Resume in 2016


Location: The Leaf Lake Ski Trails, at km 54 near the East Gate park entrance.

Distances: Do the 4.6 km ski from the parking lot to Dee's Cabin on the Jack Rabbit & Leaf Lake Loops, or venture a little further on the stunning Pine Tree Loop, 12.6 km from the parking lot to Dee's Cabin. After lunch, it is a short 2 km return to the parking lot.


Wildlife: Short signs along the trails will correspond to the winter habitat of various Algonquin wildlife species. Near the end of the ski, park naturalists and researchers will present informative displays about many different species within Algonquin Park. Chat with them about how species survive the winter, and learn about the many interesting findings from research in the park. Do all this while enjoying a chili lunch and hot chocolate at Dee's Cabin.

Day-of Registration - in the Leaf Lake Parking Lot starting at 9 a.m.

Suggested Start Time - from the Leaf Lake Parking Lot at 10:00 a.m.

Ski Excursion on Trails - 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.*

Lunch and Wildlife Presentations - 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

*you are welcome to ski for longer, however lunch ends at 2:00 p.m!

(and please remember to be off the trails before dusk)


Cost: Park entrance fees, and $10/person, or $25/family

Please note: all participants must have a daily or seasonal park pass, available at the East Gate (km 56), the Visitors Centre (km 43) and the West Gate (km 0).
